At Leggett, CA, we left US 101 and headed over to the closer coast road, Hwy. 1. Twenty-two winding miles later we ended up on the California coast.

We do love the California coast. We went through Westport and were tempted to stop for the community BBQ going on there that Saturday. It was a beautiful day for a BBQ: crisp and clear. A few miles further down the coast in Cleone, CA, our weather check said it was 60 degrees. Cool!

And there were these pink lilies everywhere! I looked up pictures on the web and saw they are called Naked Ladies.

In California, August is the month of the naked ladies. They are to be found dancing in gardens and along roads up and down the state. They dance, however, only in the wind, being rooted firmly in the ground--not wild California women, but pink lily-like blossoms of the plant Amaryllis belladonna. The fanciful name was inspired by the fact the plans have no trace of leaf when they are blooming. (http://goldengategarden.typepad.com/golden_gate_gardener_/2011/08/naked-ladies-wildly-successful-plant-of-the-month.html)

We stopped for the night at Fort Bragg, CA, and the Surf and Sand Lodging. That evening we had blackened local rock fish with Yukon gold potato salad and slaw...and split a serving of chocolate bread pudding with Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey sauce from The Q in town. It was all really good!

Sunday, the 26 of August, we set out to complete our touring of the California coast. We decided to find a place on the way for breakfast, and I'm so glad we did! In Elk, CA, we stumbled on Queenie's Roadhouse Cafe. The food was exceptional and the atmosphere in the cafe was friendly and welcoming. BYOB, but we had no champagne chilled. ;-) I had wild rice and pecan waffles with maple syrup, butter, and a side of "really done" bacon (BTW, in Oregon and here the request was made and resulted in bacon as I like it: nothing shiny on it. ;-)...and Wayne had a western omelet with jalapenos, whole wheat toast, home fries, and raspberry preserves. One of the most enjoyable venues/meals/finds on this trip so far!

Apparently this is a favorite of the locals because many were greeting each other and the workers when they entered.

From Queenie's we drove down the coast towards Point Reyes. The ride was as spectacular as ever.

For the evening we stopped at a Holiday Inn Express in Santa Nella, CA. We were ready to drop by the time we got there after navigating the San Francisco area on an afternoon when the San Francisco Giants were playing the Atlanta Braves. Santa Nella doesn't even come up on most of our printed maps, and it was really like just a wide spot in the road with a couple of motels and a couple of chain restaurants. It was totally a stop for convenience.

It was about 106 degrees late that afternoon, and we used air conditioning that night for the first time since we left Spokane. The HI Express was like a little oasis, though, with all the rooms facing a lush (obviously irrigated) courtyard. The breeze was up and we were actually comfortable sitting outside in a little gazebo area. Must be the dry heat vs. the humid heat, right? ;-)

The interior of southern California didn't have a lot of appeal for us. It was barren, dusty,...and turned us against interstate rest areas until we got to Arkansas! Monday, the 27th, after a day of this, we stopped in Barstow, CA, so we'd be ready to start our trek across I-40 the next day. Barstow was a good size town, being the place where I-40 begins, but the only place we could find to stay was a Quality Inn on Route 66. Not bad at all, clean and comfy, with a Mexican restaurant on site. We had dinner from their that night and it was pretty good.

Tuesday, the 28th, we drove from Barstow to Flagstaff, AZ. We traveled by the Mojave Reserve and Desert. HOT!!! Arizona offered some change in scenery, for the good. I kept expecting to see the motorcycle rider from Raising Arizona...but, instead, saw a different sort of biker at one of our stops that day....

Looked like "worldly possessions" in the basket...so I looked around inside for the likely owner. Spotted a young man with maps strewn all around and a large drink in hand (free refills).

We ran into a heavy rain shower at 5600 ft. in elevation. It did a little to wash off this poor little Chevy Impala, road weary and bug laden. Lots of trains, long trains, as we passed through this area.

Flagstaff was a joy! At 7000 ft. elevation, it was cool and breezy. The home to Northern Arizona Univ., it is small, but has a real personality. We decided to check out one of the DDD recommendations here, Salsa Bravo. The food was good, but we'd have to give it a 3 out of 5 since they didn't bring our margaritas before the food.

Wednesday, the 29th, brought us to Albuquerque, NM, for the evening. The landscape in New Mexico was immediately different. In particular, there were areas to the west of Albuquerque that had outcroppings of black, charred looking rock. Turns out it's volcanic rock...and we probably noticed it in the area close to...wait, it's coming...Black Rock, NM.

I'm quite sure we didn't see the best of Albuquerque. For one thing, we were on the west perimeter of the city, right next to the interstate. At this point in our trip, we weren't even interested in going downtown to see the sights that night...

Thursday, August 30, we decided we'd seen enough of I-40 and were ready to be home. We left Albuquerque that morning and didn't stop until we'd gone through Texas and all the way to Oklahoma City, OK. (Well, we stopped, we just didn't STOP.) Most memorable about Oklahoma City for me: Angry Birds. Morning and night, this is what I saw outside our motel room in the courtyard area. Lucy was spooked!

Friday, August 31, we made it all the way back to Jackson, TN. The trip included a brush with remains of Isaac as we got to Little Rock, AR, that afternoon. The winds weren't too bad. The rain was steady. The interstate, though, with the road spray, 75 mph + trafffic, and close quarters between cars and trucks made us uncomfortable. We spotted Hwy. 70 on the map, running parallel to I-40, and ducked off for a little while. It was lunch time, anyway, and we were hoping to find a local cafe. Viola!! There was a sign to Advada's Cafe in Carlisle, AR.

We did a little back tracking and found it, parking lot filled (always a good sign.) Inside was like a warehouse with all kinds of bric-a-brac hanging 'round. A buffet was set out with southern style cooking...and a menu was available. Wayne went for the patty melt with FF, and I got the hamburger steak with salad ("a la Mother": iceberg lettuce with tomato pieces). It was good, and the feeling in the cafe was good, too. There were a lot of people around in large groups enjoying the time there. Check it out if you're in the area.

Saturday was an easy drive home. We pulled in around 3 PM.

It was a wonderful trip! Would we do another road trip again? Not this road trip...but another one, yes. Would we go back to the Northwest Coast? In a heartbeat. We logged 7500 miles on the Impala and went through 17 states besides Tennessee.

I was thinking about the conveniences we had on this trip that travelers didn't have even 10 years ago. We had a GPS, though it sometimes chose some weird paths, just like Google Maps. We switched from US Cellular to Verizon before this trip because we realized US Cellular's coverage in the traveling area was often poor or nil. We have a data plan on our phones so we can get internet coverage through them, and we used an app called FoxFi that would create a wifi for us anywhere data coverage existed. This allowed us to use our computers when necessary, even if we weren't around a wifi. Wayne got a booster for his cell phone to make sure he'd have coverage on the trip...and there were times when it was needed. Business went on, as usual, as we were traveling, meaning Wayne often spent 4-5 hours working during the weekdays.

TripAdvisor app was a big help in assessing motels and restaurants, as was TV Food Maps, Local, and Google Maps. We started using the voice recognition option for searching on Google or for composing emails as we progress in the trip. We'd usually have to make a few changes to the text, but overall it was easier than typing in everything on the phone screen keyboard while riding in a car.

Soundhound app was good for identifying artist and title when listening to those oldie stations. Gas Buddy was great for finding the cheapest gas around, especially since we always seem to travel at a time when fuel costs are on the rise. I tried a new app called Glympse to allow others I specified to see our current location, but couldn't get the hang of it (at least no one acknowledged the message sent). One Bus Away app was great in Seattle. It could spot our location at a bus stop and indicate when the next bus was arriving. And, of course, the phone camera and video cam came in handy for impromptu recording of events.

I'm sure we'll think of things to add to this "journal" as the days go by...and I will re-edit the posts as needed. Hopefully I'll get all of this down in a written format soon for us to enjoy for some time.

We drove from Oklahoma City, OK, to Jackson today...and went through the part of Isacc's remains that came through Arkansas. Not bad...I'll report in detail later. Will finish recording the events after Oregon Coast when we get home this weekend. Doris, Wayne, and Maggie Prichardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14082849745570726577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323596074013868231.post-45509027618634662682012-08-31T15:45:00.002-07:002012-09-03T17:54:45.439-07:00Down the Oregon CoastWe left Seaside, OR, on Friday, August 24, and headed down the Oregon coast...staying as close to the water as possible.

When we originally planned this trip we were going to head due west from Seaside and hit towns like Salt Lake City, Boise, St. Louis. Our stay in Seaside just made us hungry to see more of the West Coast, though. We have, on another trip, been down the coast from Point Reyes, CA, to near Mexico. If we were to follow the coast down to Point Reyes on this trip...we would have all the West Coast covered except for that part on the western shores of the Olympic Peninsula. AND...if we then hopped on down to Barstow, CA, we could catch the beginning of I-40 and follow it all the way home, completing the feat of traveling I-40 (at one time or another) from one end to the other. Dubious a goal as it sounds, it has appeal to us.

Things we observed that day on our way down to Bandon Beach, OR, from Seaside:

The scenery is so pretty, you almost can't get "there" from "here." We must have stopped 10 times before we realized we'd better get on with the day. (Our rental is due back Sunday, Sept. 2.)

Back to what else we observed. You can't pump your own gas in Oregon. Didn't know that. Looked it up on the Net and found this in a Wikipedia article on filling stations:

"...the 1951 Oregon statute banning self-service gasoline lists 17 different justifications, including the flammability of gas, the risk of crime from customers leaving their car, the toxic fumes emitted by gasoline, and the jobs created by requiring mini service.[20] In addition, the ban on self-service gasoline is seen as part of Oregonian culture. One commentator noted, "The joke is when babies are born in Oregon, the doctor slaps their bottom, ‘No self-serve and no sales tax’ [. . .] It's as much a cultural issue as an economic issue. It's a way of life."[21] In 1982 Oregon voters rejected a ballot measure sponsored by the service station owners, which would have legalized self-service gas.[22]" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filling_station)

Bandon Beach Motel was great. Friendly hosts, nice room with view of the beach.

Saturday, August 25, we continued down the West Coast, eventually moving from Oregon to California. We stopped for breakfast at the Paradise Cafe in Port Orford, OR. We were trying to save time for scenic views along the way, so we both ordered a breakfast sandwich to go. We sidled up to the counter and sat down next to a line of men, all with, as Wayne says, "facial hair." I overhead part of the conversation with the two men next to me. It involved one of them being harassed by The Court over child care payments. "Are they staying off your back now?" "Yes...long as I keep payments up."

The whole place was being run by one cook and one waitress...and they had over 20 customers, easily. The waitress never stopped moving. When she wasn't dishing up food she was refilling the Splenda containers or plumping up the napkin holders. Anyway, when she brought our sandwiches over, bagged up, she asked if we wanted forks and knives. No, we thought, these are breakfast sandwiches, right? These were the biggest breakfast sandwiches we've ever seen. They were $6 each and we noted the price on ordering...but chalked it up to this being the "only game in town." The biscuit on which this was served was 6" in diameter if it was an inch. And I'd swear it had been "baked on the grill," since it looked much like an English muffin, flat on both sides. Oh, it was good...but there is no way either of us could eat the whole sandwich. ;-)

There was some road work in Oregon on the way down. Interesting procedure for handling the traffic. A pilot car, labeled "Pilot Car: Follow Me" guided a string of cars around orange cones...stopping for the occasional "Mad-Max-like" truck to pass.

Speaking of the road in Oregon...they have this Coastal Bike Route all along these roads we were taking. Trouble is, there's often no bike lane AND there are curves, hills... I talked with one biker as we were shopping the grocery deli area for supper one night. I asked about the "route." He admitted it was iffy...and asked that we watch out for him. Note to my biking friends: think twice!!

We crossed the Rogue River (on yet another historic bridge!) and saw the small fishing boats lined up on either side of the bridge right down the middle of the river. When we were in Seaside we talked to a commercial fisherman who said these boats are usually fishing for salmon or sturgeon.

"Animal Hospice Rummage Sale." Hmmmm? Wayne speculated it was a rummage sale for the local animal shelter. "We'll take care of this pet until it dies...and we'll say when it dies."

Signs indicating "slides." We were looking to the upper hill for rock slides. Nope. It was road slides like the kind they have on Jellico Mtn.

Right before we left Oregon roads we saw a sign designating an "Elk Meadow" and elk viewing. Well! We'd spent all this time roaming around this region of the country and while we'd seen lots of "Elk Crossing" signs, we'd seen no elk. We quickly made a turn and were rewarded with the sight of a small herd of elk!

We walked around the area on our first full day there and met some people "crabbing" off the 12th Street Bridge over the Necancium River that runs through the town. It's a well-known site for catching Dungeness crabs in this area of the country, as described here.

Join the crowd on Seaside’s 12th Avenue Bridge over the Necanicum River. The newly improved bridge features extra wide sidewalks where you can pull up a lawn chair and cooler, dip your crab pots into the river, and wait for the catch of the day! Parking is just across the street at Goodman Park, where the kids can entertain themselves on the playground!....
Our favorite place to eat was Bell Buoy's restaurant. Bell Bouy's has a store front, too, where they sell canned tuna and Dungeness crab. We had a couple of meals there...the best being the daily special of fried tuna and chips. Very tasty. (Just like chicken!) Talked with the cook who said, "We don't make a lot of money doing this...but we eat really well!"

One day we drove back up to Astoria on the Columbia River. On the way back we stopped for lunch in Gearhart, right north of Seaside, at the Gearhart Cafe. The only thing that disappointed us about the meal was that they didn't have the home made blackberry fried pies that day!

Left Seattle yesterday morning with our triple shot Latte and Americano in hand...and an old fashion donut to munch. (Not Top Pot, but still good. We did have Top Pot donuts here and they were tasty!) It was a great visit and we'd definitely come back for more.

We took I-5 down to Olympia, then got off on smaller roads to head over towards our preferred "ride"...US 101. We immediately felt better! Trees all around...occasional little towns to provide visual entertainment.

Shortly after we started out we decided to call the Knoxville Budget Rental office about our car's mileage. So far we've put over 4,000 miles on the Chevy Impala. When I picked it up, I talked with them about the trip and was thinking it would be "about 2,500 miles each way, 5,000 round trip." They gave us the car that had 6,000 to go before it needed an oil change. We're going to need an oil change before we get back to Knoxville. I was thinking maybe we'd just swap this car for another at a Budget office. No...the guy said just "Go ahead and get the oil changed when you get to 12,000 miles on the car. Nothing pricey, something around $20, and keep the receipt." All righty then!

For lunch we stopped in Montesano, WA, and lucked on the Savory Faire restaurant/cafe/caterers. Now, it's not a place to drop in if you're in a hurry. I'd say we spent a good 1.5 hours there. But...the food was good and uniquely prepared. They make their own breads (and desserts, though we didn't indulge). Wayne had a reuben that came prepared on orange rye bread...and I had a spinach salad with egg, bacon, cauliflower, cashews, and a sweet celery seed dressing (with fresh wheat roll and butter). I'd recommend it if you're in the area.

Driving down US 101 we'd catch glimpses of water...sometimes a bay or river...and, finally, the Columbia River at the Pacific Ocean. We made sure to take all the "alternate" routes that took us closer to the coast. We crossed the Astoria-Megler Bridge that took us from Washington to Oregon, and went on down to Seaside, OR, our home for four nights.

We're staying at the Tradewinds Condos/Motel. To look at the outside, it's not much. But inside the studio condo, ocean view, we have a really nicely done room and bath. It has a kitchenette with surface cooktop (2 eyes), microwave, little refrigerator, sink, and enough dishes and cookware to be able to actually cook something that's not from a freezer! With that in mind, we got pork chops to fry and corn on the cob, slaw, tomatoes, and cooked beets for supper. Can you tell we've been dying for some "normal" food?

Back to the Tradewinds condo...We face the ocean and have a nice big window that opens up for the breeze. No air conditioning here, just as with the last place in Seattle, but a corner electric fireplace and a couple of other wall heaters for what must be the typical weather here. Yesterday was one of those "hottest days of the year" around here, so we opened the window and the door to get a good cool breeze going. This morning we're sipping coffee and looking out at the ocean with the window mostly closed because it gets down into the 50's at night. Very pleasant.
For this trip we took the car instead of a bus.

Ballard was of interest because of the boating heritage there...and, from Wikipedia [subdued cringe]:

Historically Ballard is the traditional center of Seattle's ethnically Scandinavian seafaring community, who were drawn to the area because of the salmon fishing opportunities.[22] In recent years the decline of the fishing industry, and the addition of numerous condo buildings, has decreased the proportion of Scandinavian residents but the neighborhood is still proud of its heritage. Ballard is home to the Nordic Heritage Museum, which celebrates both the community of Ballard and the local Scandinavian history. Scandinavians unite in organizations such as the Sons of Norway Leif Ericson Lodge and the Norwegian Ladies Chorus of Seattle. Each year the community celebrates the Ballard SeafoodFest and Norwegian Constitution Day (also called Syttende Mai) on May 17 to commemorate the signing of the Norwegian Constitution.[23]

Locals once nicknamed the neighborhood "Snoose Junction," a reference to the Scandinavian settlers' practice of using snus.[24] For the full article on Wikipedia, click here.

We passed the marina and the waterfront area. Ballard looked pretty quiet as we drove through....so we continued on to Fremont.

Fremont, self proclaimed Center of the Universe, was another story. There's a market on Sundays and we hit it just right. We parked south of the Fremont Bridge and walked across to the blocks that were sectioned off for the pedestrian market. It was less of a farmers' market and more of a craft fair...with an "indoor" section that had flea market undertones. It was fun strolling the aisle and checking out all the jewelry stalls! (Wayne already has way too much jewelry, so he was along for the ride.) I bought a pair of origami earrings...thinking I'd save them for dry, non-rainy days. As I was paying for them the artist said they were varnished and very durable. I'll see!

We've been in Seattle since Monday afternoon. We got to our address at around 1:30 and needed to wait an hour to get in because they were still cleaning up from the last renters. To kill time, we went down to Aiki Beach area nearby and ordered a take-out sandwich from a little beach grill. The area was nice, shady, and we had no trouble finding a place to enjoy our picnic.

This is our little home here, West Seattle Vacation Cottage. I will take some pictures of my own before we leave it tomorrow (and when we have all of our JUNK removed). The only odd thing about this rental is that there is no TV service. We have a TV and a Wii unit so we have Netflix. The only thing we miss in this setup is the nightly news. We can stream NPR...just miss Brian Williams. ;-) The garage apartment/cottage has plenty of skylights and is well ventilated. We've had two really hot days here (by Seattle standards) and with the aid of fans have made it through without air conditioning. It's been nice.

Once we got in on Monday we walked around the neighborhood and...OK, I'm totally sipping the Kool-Aid here...I love this area! West Seattle itself has such neat houses with lots of flowers and plants, often cascading down a rock wall area. Seems like a very "hip" area with lots of 30-somethings and lots of kids (4-yr-old somethings). You can tell the older homes are being bought up and renovated (or replaced completely) in this area.

We access our cottage from the alley. At the short end of the alley is the bus stop to downtown. Walk up Admiral Way a few blocks and there's a Safeway grocery, a Metropolitan Market (like a Fresh Market only larger), a movie theater, and all kinds of restaurants and shops. For supper the first night we got ready-made food from the Metropolitan.

Tuesday, our first full day in seattle, we started out with a bus trip downtown and a visit to Pike Place Market.

How I managed to catch two smokers in this area is amazing. I haven't seen much of this here. They must be visiting from the East.

The Market is everything it's cracked up to be. For the first day out we just did a walk through, which took a while anyway. Then we walked around downtown area some and ended up at the Pike Street Fish Fry up in the Capitol Hill area. Score 2 for good fish and chips on this trip. We had the cod and had more than we could eat.

That afternoon we loaded up our dirty clothes (first washing since we left on Aug. 3!) and headed to a local coin laundry. Snacked on cheeses and veggies for supper.

Wednesday we hit our next stops on the list of "must sees"....Gig Harbor and the Olympic Peninsula. We left by car around 9AM and stopped in Gig Harbor first. Historic downtown area, lots of boats, lots of dogs and dog do-dad shops. I had Lucy on the leash and forgot my camera for the walk-around, but I love the software-altered photo of Gig Harbor by Jim Nelson....

From Gig Harbor we made our way over to the main part of the Olympic Peninsula, stopping in Port Angeles to check out Olympia National Park and get a take out lunch. We decided, since it was already noon by the time we got there, that we'd rather hit the coastal area of the peninsula rather than do a "little something" in the park, which is mainly on the interior part of the peninsula.

With that in mind, we headed out towards Dungeness and Sequim, and had a good time doing that route. We stopped at a park near Dungeness and had our lunch...then rode along the coast looking at the views and the homes along the way. This was lavender country, so we got to see lots of lavender fields, too. At one point we stopped at a park that had a beach. The sand was really dark, and the stones on the beach were really different. I've collected some for my "stone collection." Some views from that part of the day...

Thursday we were going to relax a bit more. Yeah, I know we're "on vacation," but we were feeling a lot like we'd been goin' at it every day for a while. While Wayne drove up to visit Fisheries Supply, I went back downtown by bus to check out the Seattle Public Library and SHOP the Pike Place Market.

First stop, the library. I found it with no problem (it's a Seattle landmark) and had just walked in the front door when the fire alarm went off. "Everybody out!" Surely it was a fire drill? No. Fire engines began arriving and moving the gathered pedestrians over away from the door. I waited a while, but decided not to waste too much time here since Pike Place was waiting. I decided to come back on the weekend...if it was still standing.

Off to Pike Place Market! First place I spied was the Art Stall Gallery, a co-op gallery for 13 "professional women artists" since 1965. (Aside: a friend and I have just decided we can introduce ourselves as "artists." Now we have to decide, I see, when we will say, "professional artists.") I spoke for a while with the artist on duty, then looked around and selected a small original piece and some postcards. I spent the rest of the morning walking around and snapping pictures. Here are a couple...

Pike Place Market area

When I got back to the cottage Wayne and I walked to Maharaja, an Indian restaurant with a good looking buffet for lunch. (The name of the place gives away the fact that it is Eastern Indian. I feel sure there's a Western Indian buffet somewhere in these parts.) Then we picked up Lucy and set out to walk down to Aiki Beach by one of the West Seattle walking trails. Mistake #1: This was one of the hottest days of the year for Seattle, low 90's. Mistake #2: taking Lucy. Wayne warned me, but I thought she would do it. Two out of three of our schnauzers have been prissy walkers and Lucy is one. They'll walk just so far....then stop, even lay down to prove the point.

We'd gone about 1/4 mile when the "trail" switched from pavement to "trail." We could see on the map where it was supposed to be...but we could not find the opening. Oh, well, we'll just take the roads. They were all headed down hill and we could see the water from our hilltop view. Another 1/4 mile down, Lucy gave up on us. So then we carried her during the sunny patches and put her down to walk for the few shady patches we passed through.

When we finally reached the beach...it was, in a word, HOT! The beach was busy with people and there was not much of a cool breeze that afternoon. No shady places to sit like we'd found on our first day here...and no dogs allowed on the beach. Lucy was fine with that. After a short walk around the sidewalk areas I volunteered to walk back to the car while Lucy and Wayne perched on a shady stair leading up to someone's house. On the way back up I spotted the bottom of the piece of trail we were to have taken. It was so overgrown that I wouldn't walk back up in it, despite it's shady lure.

Lucy was thrilled to see the car, as was Wayne. We took Lucy back to the cottage and drove to the waterside park we'd visited the first day here. A little walking and we found a nice cafe with front open to the street and water. We got a table near the front and spent the next hour sipping adult beverages and enjoying the shade, the cool, and the scene.

That evening we ordered delivery pizza from Pagliacci Pizza. Yum!

Friday we left the cottage at 8:30AM and made our way up I-5 to Anacortes and the ferry that would take us to the San Juan Islands. In particular, we were going to Friday Harbor on the island of San Juan.

We stopped at a grocery in Anacortes for picnic food and then found a parking space close to the ferry facility. The weather was beautiful...and one of those days when the sun was really warm, but the shade could be almost too cool. There were lots of walk-ons for the ferry, but plenty of room for everyone to have the view and seat they wanted. We tried several spots before settling in at the front of the ferry, behind glass. It was a lovely cruise and we could see why this is such a big cruising area for Northwestern boaters: cozy harbors, shady islands, pleasant water.

Friday Harbor was picturesque. Boats and people were everywhere. It had the feel of a port of call for a cruise ship! We found a nice bench with a view and had our picnic...then walked the docks checking out vessels.
Saturday we wanted more of downtown Seattle. We took the bus down to the international section of downtown and had lunch at a little Thai restaurant called Thai Curry Simple. (Bob, the kid on their home page looks like Charlie.) It was a great choice. Which brings up our source for finding this and the Pike Street Fish Fry. One of Seattle's local publications, Seattle Met, had a feature in the July 2012 issue titled "Cheap Eats and Beer: 127 Amazing Meal Deals and 93 Mighty Microbrews." So far, the suggestions have been "right on!" We do love a good deal.

We wanted some t-shirts for our boys, so we walked from the international district to Pike Place Market. Most of the walk was along 1st Avenue and it was bustling with people enjoying a Saturday morning and tons of people walking to the CenturyLink Field for a Seattle Sounders match.

T-shirts in bag, we walked up to the public library for a visit inside. It really is a beautiful library...and seems very user friendly. Everyone I talked to there had a pleasant attitude. ;-) We went up to the highest viewpoint inside and I got these shots from there.
Today's our last day here. We leave tomorrow morning for a scenic drive down to Seaside, OR, and four days by the beach. Not sure what we'll do today...maybe a city tour just to wrap things up. There's a lot we've seen...and a lot more we haven't seen. We didn't do Victoria on this trip, in spite of the fact that it was highly recommended by everyone we talked to about this region. We're eyeing a couple of other trips that could afford us an opportunity to visit Victoria in the future. All in all, we've had a very good visit to the Seattle area.

A town named Blue Earth.

A gate or "arm"permanently fixed at the bottom of the interstate ramps that when lowered would indicate that the interstate is closed. At first I thought the obvious: interstate is closed when there's so much snow, ice, or wind on it you can't travel safely. I did a little looking on the Internet and saw that sometimes the interstate is closed because the Blue Angels are performing and they want to eliminate the possibility of accidents.

Road sign: Gusty Winds

Another road sign: Chain up area

Flathead Indians, Flathead County, Flathead cherries - "Despite their name, the Flatheads do not, and never did, have flat heads. This paradoxical statement is explained by the fact that the Indians of the Columbia region, most of whom formerly compressed the head by artificial means, considered their own heads as pointed, and contemptuously applied the term 'flat-heads' to their neighbors in the mountains, who had not the custom, but allowed the skull to retain its natural shape. " (http://www.omaha.lib.ne.us/transmiss/congress/flathead.html)

Taxidermy "salons"

Little homes nestled in a cocoon of evergreen

When we originally conceived of this trip we were looking at a book called ROAD TRIP USA: CROSS-COUNTRY ADVENTURES ON AMERICA'S TWO-LANE HIGHWAYS by Jamie Jensen. We saw that US Hwy. 2 could take us all the way from the East Coast to Seattle. We would pick it up in Wisconsin and follow it out across the top of the US. Seemed like a great plan until we started trying to book pet friendly motels. In some months...some summers...we could count on being able to leave Lucy in the car at night (an idea she embraces). But in THIS summer, we couldn't count on that being an option because of the unusually hot weather. So, we planned to hit Hwy. 2 for some part of the trip....and this was it.

A two-lane road, for the most part, the highway went northwest of Kalispell up into the Idaho Panhandle area. (Mike, it was beautiful!) Much of the time we were riding beside a chain of lakes up through Montana, then crossed over into Idaho less than 40 miles from the Canadian border.

When we got down to Bonners Ferry, ID, we were ready for lunch. We'd crossed over into the Pacific time zone so we were somewhat limited in choices for lunch at 11 AM on a Sunday morning. We headed into the "downtown" area and spotted the Panhandle Restaurant. There were several tables already taken in the little place and the windows were clean...all good signs. We took menus and looked at the specials, then ordered: Wayne got the grilled ham and cheese sandwich with fries and I got fruit and cottage cheese...with a request for the homemade huckleberry pie a la mode as a chaser. It was all good, and plenty. I'd say they had opened a whole can of fruit cocktail for my plate! ;-) The huckleberry pie was delicious. Just a hint of cinnamon. Here's a shot of the restaurant from the next block, looking up Main Street, Bonners Ferry, ID.
Spokane was only a couple of hours away, and a pleasant ride. We got to our motel for the night...the Hotel Ruby...at around 2PM. They had been full the night before and were still doing the rooms so asked us to come back at 3PM.

Spokane was blazing hot. They had a high of 94 that day and it felt every degree of it. We started to walk around town, but gave that up and took a car tour.

Our impression of the town is that it's very upscale. The neighborhoods we drove around in near downtown were gorgeous. Downtown itself looked like most downtown areas with some "dead" buildings, but a lot of nice things going on, too. There was a large park down by the river and smaller green parks scattered throughout the areas we traveled.

Back to the hotel at 3, we got our room. Hotel Ruby is an older downtown motel that has been modernized and jazzed up with an art theme...

Sunday evening we decided to try one of the restaurants listed on flavortownusa.com, Hill's Restaurant and Lounge. It was a short walk from the Hotel (a walk made longer by the heat out that evening!). We were pleased with the experience. We were there early, 5PM, and everyone there was in the bar, so that's where we went. Wayne had the fish and chips, which is their claim to fame, and I had the chicken and smoked jack cheese filo. The fish was well prepared and not greasy. We'd give the place a favorable review.
We stayed at the Kalispell LaQuinta 2 nights. Woo-who! Two nights in one place!! The motel was packed both nights due to a tour bus. We had booked months ago and got a kitchenette in the room so the first night we bought shrimp and had peel and eat.

We got oriented with a walk around the downtown area. Cute place with restaurants, library...then back to the motel for a restful evening.
Saturday we drove to Glacier National Park and "did" the Road to the Sun. We both rated the road as #2 scariest we've driven with #1 being the Amalfi coast (that road was more narrow). Road to the sun offered fantastic views, but the kind that the camera couldn't do justice. We had downloaded the park podcasts before we got there and were able to listen to narrative as we made our way. We stopped at Sun Point for a lunch we'd packed and walked a while on the trail there.

We stayed at a LaQuinta Thursday night in Bozeman. We got there around 3 PM and Wayne caught up on the day's business activities while I worked some on the blog.

When supper time came we found the local food co-op and their hot food bar. We feasted on roasted coho salmon, wilted local greens, chipotle potato salad, orange and raisin quinoa...and topped in off with chocolate covered candied ginger. It was delicious!

Friday morning we left Bozeman and started our trip to Kalispell, MT, right next to the Glacier National Park. We finally got off of I-90!! We did 1355 miles on I-90 for a total drive time of 21+ hrs.

One of the prettiest parts of the drive Friday was the mountain area east of Butte on I-90. I was driving (80mph) and Wayne tried valiantly to get some pictures. You don't want to pull over on the shoulder to get a pic when the traffic is buzzing by at that speed...so we didn't get a clear picture.

I searched online for a description and image of the rocks and came up with a website that describes the area I'm talking about.

And...on a blog (thewritingscott.blogspot.com) I found this picture:

These rocks are amazing. They look like something that's been dribbled down the side of a Mateus wine bottle. To read about how this type of rock is formed (fair warning to the viewers out there, batholiths are involved...) check out the ButteAmerica.com article sited above. Doris, Wayne, and Maggie Prichardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14082849745570726577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323596074013868231.post-83215258360354354382012-08-10T07:23:00.000-07:002012-08-10T18:33:09.883-07:00Mitchell, SD, to Buffalo, WYThursday, August 9, 2012 -
Left Mitchell around the usual time: 8:15 AM. Breakfast at the Kelly was normal for free breakfast...but they did have bananas! ;-) I had thought about driving by Mitchell's claim to fame, the Corn Palace ("Only one in the world". Go figure.), BUT...decided not to succumb to the billboard madness and instead headed straight for good ole I-90 W. The GPS voice said, "Follow I-90 W for 481 miles...." Whew! Yesterday was our longest day traveling yet. To make matters worse, we went over into Mtn. Time, so whereas we began the trip thinking, "Hey, we'll get there by 2:30!" we had to re-write our expectations when we realized there was a time change involved.

We stopped in Rapid City, SD, for lunch at Olive Garden then made our way on through Sturgis to Buffalo, WY, and the Z-Bar Motel. Buffalo was great and the Z-Bar was great!

We were greeted at Z-Bar by Gusty Winds, the manager. Oh, just kidding! I saw that sign today in Montana and just thought it would be a great stage name for this guy. His name is George and he was a cowboy/ranch hand on a property about 20 miles from Buffalo up until last year when he had "an accident" and a horse fell on top of him. He broke all the ribs on his left side, dislocated his shoulder, and broke his collarbone. Needless to say, he had to go to the hospital and stay there for months. That hospital is within walking distance of the Z-Bar. George would walk over to the motel and chat with the owner while he was staying at the hospital for rehab. One day the owner asked him if he had done any carpentry in his ranch hand jobs. Yes, he had. When he got out of rehab he started working for the Z-Bar. Eventually the owner asked him to be the manager. George says he has a real deal going. He gets an apartment with free utilities, salary as a manager...plus his social security and veteran's benefits from service related health problems in Vietnam. And no horses.

George is a case! He came over and talked for a while that evening as we were sitting outside and enjoying the shade and breeze in 89 degree weather. Then he came over this morning and talked up a storm while I was attempting to blog (excuses, excuses).

The Z-Bar room was a good deal for the money. Small....smaller than the Microtel room...but clean and adequate with wifi and cable TV. A bench and chair were outside every little cabin and the parking space was right next door. A grassed, shaded picnic area formed the center of the little compound. Would we come back? You betcha...George said to!
While Wayne was working yesterday afternoon I visited the local library. I like to check out the local libraries and see if they have any t-shirts for my boys Alex and Ryan. It was a beautiful facility and well used.
This morning we ate at the Main Street Diner for breakfast then headed out towards I-90. Buffalo, WY, was a really neat little town. Loved the cute houses with flower boxes, etc. If you're ever out this way...check it out!
The Microtel was a good deal. The breakfast was about normal for "free breakfast": red delicious apples for fruit, waffle maker, instant oatmeal, and a selection of three dry cereals. They did step it up a notch by having boiled eggs! The room was small, but very comfortable.

Not long after we started our route we passed into Minnesota. Impressions: The barns are beautiful! Little traffic on I-90 W. We lunched at in Worthington, MN, at a Subway so I could say I'd "been" to Minnesota. Then South Dakota. Impressions: More traffic. Lots of motorcycles coming and going. (The annual Sturgis Cycle Rally is this week http://www.sturgismotorcyclerally.com/) Speed limit: 75mph. Acres of sunflowers! Beautiful!
Two Rivers (http://www.two-rivers.org/index.shtml) was small, right on the water, and full of opportunities for outdoor activities. The "two rivers?" East Twin River and West Twin River, according to the Rand McNally website. Who-da-thunk it?

The Wisconsin highways gave us views of houses and farms, neat as a pin. Great oldies radio stations with few ads...and the ads that are there are for "vertical mixers." Maybe the ideal setup would be a 6-month home in northern Wisconsin and a 6-month home in Florida. ?

Tomah was a place to stop for us. We really didn't get a view of it that would be fair for an evaluation...we were so late getting there. It served our purpose.Doris, Wayne, and Maggie Prichardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14082849745570726577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323596074013868231.post-33142164875318411172012-08-06T18:53:00.000-07:002012-08-10T18:44:35.518-07:00Bloomington, IN, to Tomah, WIHad a wonderful visit with Mike and Reba in Bloomington. Got there the afternoon of Friday, August 3, with no problem. Dropped Lucy off for a couple of nights at the Wayport Kennels. We went to dinner that evening to a neat restaurant called Sweet Grass. Delicious filet Mignon and crab cakes with collard greens spiked with jalapeno. YUM. Saturday Reba and I went downtown in the morning to the farmers market.

Then, after indulging in a little retail therapy (including Smith's Shoes) we met Wayne and Mike at Nick's English Hut (http://www.nicksenglishhut.com/) for a classic bar lunch. We caught up with Holly, Pete, Cole, and Gemma that evening when they came over for supper. (Gemma, do you like that? "Yeth!" ;-) What a couple of cuties.

Sunday morning we left the Roberts' home at around 8 AM to go pick up Lucy and make our way north to Kenosha, WI. On the way up I-65 we saw the huge span of wind turbines.... It was very sci-fy-ie.

Got to Kenosha in time for lunch at Frank's Diner (of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives fame)...or so we thought. Turns out they close on Sundays at 12:30 PM (I was SURE the website hours were wrong due to a tragic typo!). This is as close as we got to eating at Franks....

BUT...one of the people still sitting outside the diner offered another option in Kenosha, the Coffee Pot on 6th Avenue. She even gave us directions. And it was really close to our hotel that evening. Great! We took off, sought a parking place with shade for the pup in the car...and walked over to the Coffee Pot, checking out their nearly full outdoor dining area as we approached. Upon entering, we were told the restaurant was closed. What is this with northern diners?

Well. Not to be outdone, we settled on our proven formula. Near the water + Bar + Clean windows = Where We Ate. So nondescript that neither of us can remember the name. If you're in the area, try Frank's or the Coffee Pot and let us know what we missed.

The day wasn't lost. The reason for our stopping in Kenosha was that the Transparent Watercolor Society of America was in it's last day of showing the 36th Annual National Juried Exhibition at the Kenosha Public Museum. Salminen, Chee, Dobie, Nuttall...well, you get the "picture." I would have hated being the judge for this one. It was a great show. My favorite was Debbie Cason Rankin's PIECING IT TOGETHER IN LIJIANG. I love the texture created by watercolor "being watercolor."

John Salminen's THE MALL won a $4,000 award...and at a selling price of $5,000, was the only painting I saw marked with a "sold" red dot.

As a bonus for the day, the museum had just opened a show of Zoltan Szabo's watercolors depicting scenes from 43 of our 50 states.

Wayne and Lucy met me at around 3 PM and we headed for our hotel for the evening, the Best Western Harborside. As we checked in I was informed that hot water was not available...but hopefully would be soon, as a plumber had been called. We unloaded our stuff from the car and settled in for the day. (BTW, that whole idea of carrying in a suitcase each has been dispelled. A suitcase for each of us, a bag for Lucy, a bed for Lucy, our cooler, our food bag...you get the idea.) A little while later we walked down to the car...and saw, in the process, the ground floor of the hotel "taking on water." I talked to one of the plumbers involved and he said there was a rather large hole in a pipe that they were trying to resolve.

It had been a long day. We decided to abandon the Best Western and go to a nearby LaQuinta for the night.

This morning, Monday the 5th, we left Kenosha and headed for Two Rivers, WI, and the Kahlenberg Horn headquarters (https://www.kahlenberg.com/). CruiserMarine.com is a distributor for the Kahlenberg horns. While Wayne was conducting business, Lucy and I took in the town. I checked out the public library, then we took a walk after parking the car beside Lake Michigan and the Lighthouse Inn. The white car in the picture is our Chevy Impala rental. Rich.

For lunch we picked Kurtz's Pub and Deli, an excellent choice. We split a reuben and had a small glass of the dark Hacker-Pschorr draft beer.

After an afternoon of navigating detours on Highway 21 across Wisconsin, we are settled in at the Microtel in Tomah, WI. We've never stayed at a Microtel before, but it fits the name... everything's a little smaller. Great room, though, nice and clean. Tomorrow we head to the west....

Hoped for a Ford Fusion...will sport a Chevy Impala instead. White. Can you say "rental car?" Oh, well. Our VW's sit smug and pampered in the garage.

We're almost packed up. Strategy is to have a suitcase each with "personals" and a clothes rack in the back seat. Oh, and the computers. And Lucy's bed and "stuff." And the mini-Keurig for coffee daily. Yeah. We should be able to carry it all in on one trip.....;-)Doris, Wayne, and Maggie Prichardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14082849745570726577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323596074013868231.post-54574635551463432982012-07-22T04:58:00.001-07:002012-08-10T18:45:18.285-07:00Road trip from Knoxville, TN, to Seattle, WAFirst big road trip we've taken since the 70's, we're going to rent a car and drive from Knoxville to Seattle. We leave on Friday, August 3, 2012, and head north to Bloomington, IN, for a brief visit with Mike and Reba before turning west. We are due to have the car back in Knoxville on September 2.

We've plotted a probable route for the trip out...knowing full well that there may be changes on the way. Lucy the schnauzer is going with us, so lodging on the trip has to be pet friendly...or, as an alternative, the weather has to be nice enough for Lucy to sleep in the car. (No references to a certain presidential candidate and his trip with a dog, please. Lucy actually loves being in the car 'cause she knows we'll always come back to it. Really.)

We have an apartment in West Seattle for a week, then a condo on the northwest Oregon coast for four days. We'll work out of those spots to see as much as we can fit in through car, bus, ferry, whatever.
